Q1) Tell us a little about yourself!
My name is Bernadette Hagans, I’m 23 and I’m from Belfast. Just after turning 22, I was diagnosed with a rare & aggressive form of cancer called synovial sarcoma. This meant I had to have a through knee amputation on my right leg.
Q2) Tell us about what you do, and why you do it!
I am signed with a modelling agency, Zebedee Management. Modelling has given me the opportunity to show my amputation isn’t holding me back & has helped me gain confidence. I also work for a company called Junk Kouture, and also work alongside a few different cancer related charities! I love to keep busy and I’m happy I’m able to use what’s happened to me to help others.
Q3) What makes you feel courageous?
It still surprises me when people say I’m courageous for how I handled what happened to me. I would say, stepping out (literally) with my prosthetic because I think a lot of people expected me to hide it. It’s who I am and I’m proud of it, it shows what I’ve been through.
Q4) What is one thing you wish you could tell your 16-year-old self?
I would tell my 16 year old self to stop feeling so shy. I would say do whatever you want to do and stop Worrying about what other people will think! Make yourself happy!
Q5) What is one piece of advice you can give a fellow lady who might be lacking courage?
I would say that you should do whatever is going to make you happy. Don’t hold yourself back, you only get one life so make sure you’re living every moment of it how you want to live it. Be brave.
