Grace from Against the Grain

Q1) Tell us a little about yourself!

My names Grace, I’m 26 living in ACT, Australia. I work full time for a financial planning firm and on the side I have an Instagram and website called Against The Grain, sharing all things gluten free. I suffer from an autoimmune disease called Coeliacs disease, which is where my body attacks the small bowel when I eat wheat/ gluten. There is no cure for Coeliacs disease and the only way to manage the symptoms is by a very strict gluten free diet.

Q2) Tell us about what you do, and why you do it

I started my Instagram, Against The Grain in July 2018 posting pictures of my meals, my health journey, where I like to eat as a Coeliac and also to connect with people also suffering from the autoimmune disease.

I am currently writing a gluten free Cookbook called ‘The Real Thing’ filled with over 70 recipes that are just as good, if not better than the real thing, and I want to share these recipes with the gluten free community.

I started this journey to raise awareness for both Coeliac’s and Autoimmune diseases, I feel they are very serious and need more recognition. I would like cafes and restaurants to understand the implications of cross contamination and stating foods they prepare are gluten free when they are not safe for Coeliacs. There are 1 in 70 Australians who have Coeliac Disease and 4 out of 5 remain undiagnosed, according to the Coeliac Australia website and I don’t want anyone to remain undiagnosed.

Q3) What makes you feel courageous?

I feel courageous when I think about what I’ve accomplished in my life so far. Not letting the fear of the unknown get in the way of achieving what I want in my life and I think that takes courage.

Q4) What is one thing you wish you could tell your 16-year-old self?

Don’t let your negative experiences get in the way of your goals and dreams. Everyone has their way of learning, it’s never too late to change your path and pursue your passion.

Q5) What is one piece of advice you can give a fellow lady who might be lacking courage?

One quote I like to read when I am lacking courage is:

'Don’t be afraid of failure, only those who dare to fail can ever achieve greatly’ Quote by Robert F. Kennedy.
